The Colour of Love

When turmeric is mixed with lime it loses its yellow colour and lime its whiteness; both turn red — the colour of love. This image is used in these two couplets to convey the merging of the lover and the Beloved into one. The lover is dyed in the Lord's love and the Lord, pure and colourless, manifests himself in the loving disciple in the form of love. In this state of union only one colour remains — the colour of love; only one exists — the Lord. Men have divided themselves into groups and factions on the basis of countries, castes, colours, lineage, race and religions. These external traits or 'colours' are lost when one comes to the company of Saints and acquires a new colour — the colour of love.

Kabir, turmeric is yellow,
Lime is milky white;
When the lover and the Lord meet
Both colours are lost
In the hue of love.

Turmeric sheds its yellowness,
Vanishes the whiteness of lime;
Blessed, O Kabir, is that love
Which dissolves all the shades
Of caste, colour and clime.
