The Price of Love

The path of divine love is that of complete surrender to the Beloved, of eliminating the ego and all desires except the desire to become one with Him. Kabir says that true love can only be obtained by offering one's head as the price, that is, by completely annihilating I-ness. It might appear to be a grim precondition for love, a price hard to pay; but no sacrifice is too great and no price too high for the invaluable treasure of love.

This is the abode of love,
Not the house of your auntie;
Remove your head,
Put it on the ground,
Then alone dare step
Into love's home.

K.S.S., p. 43:1

Remove your head,
Place it on the ground,
Step upon it
With a firm resolve;
Says Kabir the slave:
If you do this,
Welcome to love's home.

K.S.S., p. 43:2

Love grows not in your flowerbeds,
It is not on sale in some stall;
The king or the commoner,
Whoever wants love,
Can gladly have it —
In exchange for his head.

K.S.S., p. 43:3

You long to taste
The elixir of love,
But at the same time
Cling to your self-esteem;
Whoever has heard of two swords
In one scabbard?

K.S.S., p. 46:32

So long as you are afraid to die
Don't call yourself a lover;
For the one like you,
Far — beyond reach —
Is the mansion of love.

K.S.S., p. 47:51

He drinks the wine of love
Who offers his head;
The selfish cannot
Pay the price,
Yet talk of love —
To no effect.

K.S.S., p. 43:4

I've heard love is on sale
In the market square
And the price demanded
Is only your head.
Don't waste time bargaining,
Cut off your head
And confirm the deal
Before it's too late.

K.S.S., p. 44:13
