The Bonds of Attachment

Kabir, the dark night
Of maya and attachment
Blankets the entire world;
Their house is pilfered
Who submit to sleep,
And they mourn and repent
After losing their wealth.

K.G., p. 27:24

Like a creeper that spreads
Over a thorny hedge,
The world has entangled itself
With attachment and desires;
The creeper will break
But not release its hold,
Like a man bound
By an irrevocable vow.

K.G., p. 27:26

Kabir, attachment's bow
Cannot be broken
Without a Master;
Men, gods and sages
Try their utmost to break it,
But it becomes
Heavier and stronger
With their touch.

K.S.S., p. 174:73

The entire world
Is a field of action,
Men plow it
To raise a good crop;
But the wild deer
Of attachment
Ruin the harvest,
And men return
Empty-handed to the barn.

K.S.S., p. 133:5

Men do not know the way
To protect their harvest;
They are devoid
Of devotion,
Of humility,
Of love for the Saint.

K.S.S., p. 133:6

When the vessel is brimming
With attachment,
It is dense and dark within;
Only a keen devotee
Realizes the truth,
Becomes detached
And reaches the other shore.

K.S.S., p. 133:7

Many mighty men,
Scholars and thinkers too,
Have been swept away
By the strong currents
Of attachment;
But the purified soul
Like a tiny fish
Swims against the current
And climbs to its goal.

K.S.S., p. 134:10
