The Witch of Avarice

Greed is a harlot,
Don't lend her your heart —
She will dog your every step
And urge you to sin.

K.G., p. 26:14

The flame of greed
Cannot be put out
By sprinkling it
With the water of fulfilment;
Day after day
More and more it will grow.
Shower it with the water
Of love and devotion
And it will die out
Like the jawasa
Withering in the rain.

K.G., p. 26:15

How am I to narrate
The merits of avarice?
Even when the body
Becomes feeble
And the senses effete,
Avarice continues
To stay young and strong.

K.S.S., p. 137:2

Avarice is a wicked witch,
The doom of all beings;
'More, more,' it cries day and night,
Spelling misery and gloom.

K.S.S., p. 137:3

Avarice, greed and cravings
Are a violent fire
That never abates;
Men, gods, sages,
And even paupers are consumed
By its blaze.

K.S.S., p. 137:4

When desires die,
All worries vanish —
The mind becomes happy
And carefree;
He who desires nothing
Is the king of kings.

K.S.S., p. 139:2

Cows and elephants,
Palaces and jewels —
All the wealth of the world
Becomes like dust
The moment the wealth
Of contentment
Enters the heart.

K.S.S., p. 139:6
