A Sword's Edge

Devotion to the Master
Is arduous;
It is to walk
On a sword's edge.
Without truth and fervour
One cannot succeed,
For intricate are the ways
Of devotion.

K.S.S., p. 31:3

The path of devotion
Is trying and hard,
Acute as a sword's edge;
Those who waver
Fall to pieces,
The steady go across.

K.G., p. 55:25

Devotion to the Master
Is trying and hard,
Not for the timid to adopt;
Who with his own hands
Removes his head,
Alone is fit to tread
The path of true Naam.

K.S.S., p. 31:4

Devotion to the Lord
Is trying and hard,
Like a path of blazing fire;
Who plunge into the flames
Go safely across,
Who waver and wait
Are scorched.

K.G., p. 55:26

Devotion is the ladder
That leads to salvation,
Which Saints promptly ascend
And reach Home with ease;
Those who become a prey
To mind's lazy ways,
Birth after birth repent.

K.S.S., p. 32:8

So long as men relish
The bonds of worldly pleasures,
They will not progress
On devotion's path;
Him I call a true devotee
Who, detached from all,
Adores only the Lord.

K.S.S., p. 32:10

The field is ruined by weeds,
The group of the noble
By the presence of the wicked;
Devotion is ruined
By avarice and greed,
As saffron
When mixed with sand.

K.S.S., p. 33:23

Darkness departs
At the sight of the sun;
Evil tendencies,
With the knowledge
That the Master grants.
Wisdom vanishes
In the presence of greed;
Devotion,
When pride comes.

K.S.S., p. 33:24

The lustful, the wrathful
And the greedy
Can never adopt
The path of devotion;
Only the valiant
Can adore the Lord —
All pride of caste,
Race and rank they discard.

K.S.S., p. 33:26

Without devotion
To the Master, O Kabir,
Of no worth is your birth
In this world;
It's like a tower of smoke
Which in moments dissolves.

K.S.S., p. 33:28

All devotion done with desire
Is devotion that is lost;
How can you thus meet
Kabir's desireless Lord?

K.S.S., p. 34:34

Kabir, through devotion
To my Master
I have washed away
The dirt of delusion;
The days that have passed
Without devotion
Rankle in my heart
Like an arrow's broken shaft.

K.S.S., p. 34:33
