Company of the True

In these couplets Kabir tries to impress upon the seeker's mind the importance of good company. The word used for good company is satsang, 'association of the true' or 'company of those who have realized Truth'. Kabir calls such realized persons 'men of God' or 'Saints' and says that the Lord can only be attained through their company. The time spent with them never goes to waste, for their elevating and inspiring presence and the atmosphere around them, surcharged with spirituality, leaves a deep impression on the seeker's mind and soul. A seeker becomes worthy of the gift of Naam only through his association with men of God and it is from them that he receives the blessing of Naam. Kabir says that the devotee should not expect worldly benefits and material comforts in the Saints' company, but should accept whatever hardships or discomforts he may have to face. Association with them is truly purifying — infinitely more than pilgrimages to holy places — and a short while spent in their company destroys numerous sins and removes many doubts from the seeker's mind.

Kabir, from forest
To forest I roamed
In search of the Lord;
Only when I found
The man of God
Did I attain my object.

Time spent in a Saint's company
Is never in vain;
Neem in the vicinity
Of the sandalwood tree
itself becomes fragrant —
No longer is it known
By the bitter tree's name.

K.G., p. 38:1

Keep the company of Saints,
Whose mind is always
Perfect and pure;
Beyond measure they give
The rare wealth of Naam.

K.S.S., p. 49:2

Stay in the company of Saints
Though you may only get
Oat chaff to eat;
Never go to the company
Of the evil
Even if you are offered
Milk, sweets and delicacies.

K.S.S., p. 49:4

Kabir, the company of the Saint
Is like the perfumer's shop:
Even if the perfumer
Gives you nothing,
Still the fragrance
Will fill your heart.

K.S.S., p. 49:5

Miraculous powers,
Wealth and prosperity
I do not ask for;
Only for one boon I pray —
Lord, grant to Kabir
The Saints' darshan
Night and day.

K.S.S., p. 49:6

Got to Mathura,
Go to Dwarika,
Go to Jagannath, if you so please;
But without a Saint's company
And without meditation
Nothing will you ever achieve.

K.S.S., p. 49:9

The city may be thriving,
Full of beauty and glow,
At every turn celebrations and joy;
But if it is devoid
Of a true devotee of God,
In the eyes of Kabir
It is a city
Barren and bleak.

K.G., p. 41:2

The house in which
The Saint is not adored,
The house which is empty
Of devotion for the Lord,
Kabir, that house
Is like a graveyard,
And there dwell
Only goblins and ghosts.

K.G., p. 41:3

For one hour, for a half hour,
Even for a half of a half,
Kabir, the company of Saints
A million sins destroys.

K.S.S., p. 50:23
