The Glory of Simran

 

The Lord's Name is his own essence,
It is the tilak, the diadem
Of the three worlds.
When Kabir the slave
Put it on his forehead,
He acquired
Boundless beauty and grace.

Kabir, simran is the essence
Of all paths,
All else is nothing
But a fruitless task;
I have scanned
The origin and the end
Of all practices,
And found them all
Within the bounds of Kal.

 

K.G., p. 4:5

 

If he has any concern,
This slave has concern only
For the Lord's Name;
About other matters
He worries not.
All thoughts
Save that of God
Only tighten
The noose of Kal.

 

K.G., p. 4:6

 

Kabir's heart shudders
Seeing the world aflame;
Pick up the pail
Of the Lord's simran,
Lose no time,
Extinguish the blaze.

 

K.G., p. 6:32

 

Simran leads to happiness,
Through simran pain departs;
Says Kabir, do simran
And you will merge in the Lord.

Of the monarch and the mendicant,
Of the affluent and the pauper,
He alone is noble and high
Who repeats the Name;
But, Kabir, the highest of the high
Is the one who repeats
With no expectation of reward.

Men and women
Will suffer misery
As long as desire
Guides their efforts;
Kabir, he is dear to the Lord
Who does simran
But desires no reward.

 

K.S.S., p. 87:3

 

All do simran
During the gloom of adversity;
In days of sunshine
Few repeat the Name.
If man does simran
In happiness,
He will not suffer
Adversity's pain.

 

K.S.S., p. 87:4

 

The five confidantes will call
'Beloved, Beloved'
If the sixth will repeat the Name;
Through simran
Kabir blossomed
And obtained his Beloved —
The priceless gem.

 

K.G., p. 4:7

 

My mind does simran
Of the Lord's Name,
In Him it stays absorbed;
To whom shall I bow my head
When through simran
I have become one
With the Lord?

 

K.G., p. 4:8

 

'You, you' I repeated,
And you I became;
No trace of 'I'
Is left in me.
Through this barter
I have lost my 'I' —
Wherever I look
Only you I see.

 

K.G., p. 4:9

 

The fruits of chanting and piety,
Of penance and austerity,
Can all through simran be gained;
Kabir, the true devotees know:
No other practice
Can reach the heights of simran.

Simran of the true Name
Is always fruitful,
Whether done with fervour
Or with frown;
The seed in the field sprouts
Whether it falls with its face
Upward or down.
