Faith

Faith in the Master and the Lord is an essential part of devotion. Doubt and devotion, love and hesitation, do not go together. In these couplets Kabir emphasizes the importance of faith in its three aspects. First, the devotee must have faith that the Lord, who has created all beings, has arranged also for their sustenance and is looking after them, providing for all their needs. Man needs clothes to cover his body, a roof over his head, and food to maintain him. Kabir says that the Lord provides these facilities even to beasts, birds and insects, so why should He forget man? The devotee should not allow these worries to enter his mind.

Second, whatever man has to undergo during his life in the world has already been ordained. His pralabdh karma or the fate with which he is born is changeless. No efforts, pleading or planning can change even a comma in what is written in his destiny. He should have faith in the immutability of his destiny and accept it with a composed and carefree mind.

Third, the devotee should have faith that the practice of Naam will never go to waste, nothing can stop it from bearing fruit in the course of time. He should also know that a devotee of Naam has nothing to do with the negative power and cannot be sent to hell, for Naam will always keep him linked with the Supreme Being and never let him go into lower regions or lower species. Kabir says that firm faith in the Master and the Lord is the outcome of the practice of Naam, but this faith also helps to strengthen the devotee's love for the Lord and enables him to attend to his devotion with greater earnestness.

 

Kabir, why need I worry,
What can my worrying achieve?
My Lord feels concern for me,
I have no worries of my own.
