One Cardinal Truth

Kabir points out that all external observances, yogic practices, oblations, austerities, intellectual pursuits and even striving for miraculous powers are of no help on the path of God-realization. Love or devotion is the highest truth and this alone can lead the seeker to the Lord.

Why should I strive
For supernatural powers?
They are empty and vain.
I ever cherish within me
The nectar of the Lord's Name.

Intellect and knowledge,
Mental deliberations,
Yoga and austerities —
Fallow and futile,
They lead only to maladies.

What use your becoming a recluse
And making forests your home
When your mind is still bound
By the subtle chains of desire?

All practices are hollow,
Except devotion to the Lord —
The one cardinal truth.
Says Kabir: Discard all outward pursuits,
Love the Lord with all your heart.
