How Long, O Lord?

This is a prayer of the restless devotee who, tired of the endless rounds of birth and death, longs to reach the Lord. Helpless over his own inadequacy either to please the Beloved or to make proper efforts to reach Him, the devotee prays to the Lord for mercy and help.

Tell me, Lord, tell me
How many days more
Will I have to endure
Before my soul
Becomes one with Thee?

Countless lives have I spent
Tossing in this ocean of gloom;
Not once did I get
A glimpse of Thee, beloved Lord.
Through my own doing,
Through my own delusion,
I drift in this dismal sea.
I am helpless O Thou Lord of all,
I am too feeble to swim across.
Prays Kabir: Lord, Thou art
The destroyer of misery,
The eradicator of sins,
Have mercy, meet me, beloved Lord.
Tell me, Lord, pray tell me,
How much more must I endure
Until I become one with Thee?
