The Lamp of Naam

Kabir tells the seeker to light the lamp of Naam in order to perceive the Lord within himself. Once the seeker attains God-realization, the 'lamp' of Naam will merge along with the soul into the Lord. At this stage the soul, Naam, and God, which are in essence the same, become one. The dirt of ego, karmas, and past impressions or sanskaras have blurred the mirror of the soul. The seeker has to clean the mirror through spiritual practice and realize the Lord. Kabir says that whatever he has learned and realized is not through reading and intellectual analysis but through the path of Surat Shabd Yoga, the path of Sahaj.

Why not repeat the Lord's Name,
O fatuous one.
Why keep dwelling on worldly things?

Five thieves hide within your fort,
Day and night they pilfer the vaults;
If the fort's chief is alert and firm,
Who dare rob him of his wealth?

In the dismal darkness of ignorance
One needs the lamp
To find the imperceptible jewel;
Once the Imperceptible is found,
The lamp merges and stays merged in it.

If you long to see the Lord within,
Scour the mirror, keep it clean;
If the mirror is covered with dirt
You'll not have one glimpse of the Lord.

What is there to read,
What is there to ponder on?
Why listen to recitals from holy books?
What men seek through reading and pondering,
I have attained through the path of Sahaj.

Says Kabir: I have realized the Truth;
I have realized, and my mind is at rest.
What can one do with such obstinate fools
Who trust not the evidence
Of the realized ones?
