Remove the Veil

This is a realized soul's advice to a soul who is still struggling on the path, torn between the desire to meet the Lord and pride in wealth, youth and beauty; between her love for the Beloved and hesitation before others' opinions. Kabir, in the words of the attained soul, asks the devotee to give up the obstacles of ego and worldliness, remove the veil at the eye center which is keeping him away from the inner spiritual realms of bliss, light the lamp of love within and see the Beloved face to face. But as long as the disciple keeps his face turned towards the world, towards the nine portals of the body and away from the eye center, he is like the bride who, in the presence of her husband, hides her face behind a veil — and so cannot see him.

Remove your veil, O bashful bride,
That your Beloved you meet;
Do not hide your face from your love,
Remove your veil, O bashful bride.

Utter not harsh words,
For in each heart God resides;
Be not proud of wealth and youth,
False is your garment of five hues.
Remove the veil, O bashful bride,
That your Beloved you meet.

In the nuptial chamber of Sunn
Light the lamp of love with joy;
Let nothing ever sway you
From the resolve to meet Him, O bride.
Do not hide your face from your love,
Remove the veil, O bashful bride.

Through love and concentration
My precious Lord I have met
In the chamber of bliss inside;
Do not hide your face from your love,
Remove the veil, O bashful bride.

Kabir floats in waves of bliss,
To the divine melody's sweet strains;
Your veil before the Lord is vain,
Hide not your face from your love.
Remove the veil, O bashful bride,
That your Beloved you meet.
