Lonely Nights

The soul pining for the Lord is mostly represented by Saints as a loving wife longing to meet her absent husband. The spiritual longing and pain of the soul is also reflected on the physical level — in the form of agony, sleepless nights, restless days, aching eyes and a burning heart. In this poem Kabir depicts the soul's yearning in separation and prays to the Lord to end it by granting union with Him.

When will my yearning eyes
Behold you, beloved Lord?
Without seeing you
My entire being ails
With the agony of separation.

When will my yearning eyes
Behold you, beloved Lord?

I gaze and gaze at the path
For you to come;
Lord, are you not aware
Of my heart's innermost sighs?
And yet you are not moved to come.

When, oh when, beloved Lord,
Will my yearning eyes see you?

As a fish tosses in anguish
When parted from water,
So writhes my heart
Without you, dear Lord.

When, oh when, beloved Lord,
Will my yearning eyes see you?

Without you,
Neither the dreary hours of the day
Nor the lonely watches of the night
Allow sleep to soothe my aching eyes.
How can the pining wife
Who thirsts only for your darshan
Find solace elsewhere?

When oh when, beloved Lord,
Will my yearning eyes see you?

Prays Kabir: Delay not,
Delay not, my Lord;
Remember, I belong only to you,
And bless me with union.

Let my yearning eyes
Behold you, beloved Lord!
