Under the Sway of Naam

The soul has been wandering from species to species in the cycle of eighty-four, assuming various forms. Even after obtaining a human birth, the soul dances to the tune of the mind and, under the influence of cravings and passions, again goes into the circle of birth and death. Kabir says the soul that comes under the shelter of Naam overcomes the domination of mind, becomes free from delusion, and through the practice of Naam realizes the Lord.

Though I have assumed
Myriad forms in the past,
No more forms will I take on now,
The wires, the strings and even
The instrument is frayed,
And I am under the sway
Of the Lord's Name.
Now I will not dance
To the beat of the drum —
The drum my mind played so long,
But plays no more.
Lust, anger and the world's lure
I have reduced to ashes,
The pitcher of avarice is shattered,
The gown of cravings has become old
And I am freed from the chains of delusion.
I recognize the One within all beings,
All polemics are at an end for me.
Says Kabir: Through his own grace
I have found Him, the Perfect One.
