Merging in His Order

This poem describes the devotee who, through the practice of Naam, merges himself into Naam. Now he is no longer required to come back to the world of matter since he has merged in the Lord as water merges in the sea. Kabir says that coming and going, death and birth, are according to the Lord's Order or hukam. The word hukam or 'order' has been used for Shabd by many Saints, and Kabir uses it here in that sense. He says that the devotee will realize the Order and merge into it. In the following stanza he uses the word Shabd in the same way, saying that if the Lord is merciful, the devotee will merge into the Master's Shabd. Concluding the poem Kabir says that one who dies while living will not be required to take further births.

Like water in the waters of the sea,
Like a ripple in the river
I will merge in Thee.
I will look upon all as alike,
And attaining Sunn, I will merge in Sunn;
Free of bonds and unhindered,
Like air I will be.
Why will I then come to the world again?
Coming and going is under his Order;
I will realize the Order and merge in it.

When I transcend this creation of five elements,
I will bring my wandering to an end.
Forsaking all philosophies,
I will become impartial,
I will dwell only on his Name.

Where He likes to keep me,
There will I stay,
There will I act as I am directed.
If the Lord is merciful to me,
I will merge in my Master's Shabd.

He who dies while living
And lives again after dying
Will not be born again.
Says Kabir: He who merges in the Name,
His attention remains absorbed
In the pure state of Sunn.
