Worship Only the Supreme

Like all Saints, Kabir also pleads with the seeker to worship the One Supreme Being who is free from birth and death, rise and decline. Beyond attributes, beyond mind and maya, and beyond the bounds of karma, He is far above and beyond the reach of the various gods, goddesses and incarnations men commonly worship. If the seeker adopts the practice of Naam with love and devotion, his soul will merge into its own primal, formless state — the Lord himself.

Kabir discourages the seeker from the worship of idols, deities and incarnations because they are all within the limits of the physical, astral and causal worlds. An individual's soul will go to the place and object of its attachment. The devotee who worships gods that are within the limits of the attributes will not go beyond the attributes; similarly, if he loves a spiritual guide who has not transcended the boundaries of the three worlds, he too will remain within the limits of the three worlds, for a guide cannot take a disciple to a state beyond his own reach. Kabir says that the worship of the one all-pervading Lord is the true worship, and the way of this worship is the practice of Naam with one-pointed devotion and love.

Take the shelter, my mind,
Of the all-powerful One.
Serve and adore Him —
He who has no origin,
No zenith, no decline,
Whom none can fathom.
If once you embed his Name within,
Like the devoted wife who cherishes
Her husband's love deep in her heart,
Then all your tasks,
Though a million they be,
Will be accomplished,
And all attributes of the body
Will be destroyed,
If once you embed his Name within,
Like the devoted wife who treasures
Her husband's love deep in her heart.

Taking shelter with one who has form
Will not free you from the bondage
Of physical forms,
Even if you take tlie shelter
Of Shiva, Brahma or Vishnu.
You will only reach in the end
The one you serve and adore,
For no one can go beyond
The object of his worship.

Embed the Lord's Name within,
Like the wife who treasures
Her husband's love in her heart.

Through the worship of images,
Through the worship of gods with attributes,
The soul earned again and again
Different garments to wear,
But she never attained repose
In her own lofty, formless state.
Worship of idols and forms,
Though performed for ages,
Will not take the devotee
Beyond the limits of attributes.

Embed the Lord's Name within,
Like the wife who treasures
Her husband's love in her heart.

By skillfully kneading
The five elements
And the three attributes,
The human body is made;
Without these eight the physical body
And karmas cannot come into being.
Through the body and the karmas,
The seeds of actions good and bad
Germinate and sprout and wither
To form seeds again and again;
And all take birth and die in delusion.

Embed the Lord's Name within,
Like the wife who treasures
Her husband's love in her heart.

That which is artificial
Is worshipped by men
As the Supreme Being;
How can they reach the true home
Through love of the handcrafted?
The entire world has fallen
Into the mire of delusion.
Says Kabir: That rare one
Who worships the all-pervading Lord,
With ease crosses over
To the opposite shore of bliss.

Embed the Lord's Name within
Like the wife who treasures
Her husband's love in her heart.
