Heaven

Scriptures, priests and the orthodox promise heaven after death, and men are deluded by them into believing that they will go to heaven through pious acts, worship and austerities. Kabir says that such men are ignorant, for they have not gone within and realized their own self, their true identity in the creation; neverthless they talk at length of heaven.

True devotees do not bother about heaven, where it is and what it is like. They only want the Lord and know that craving for heaven and even salvation is an obstacle to union with the Beloved. Saints clearly point out in their writings that heavens and ail astral worlds are within the limits of the three attributes and therefore subject to destruction; the Lord's abode is immutable and everlasting. Kabir says that for a true seeker if there is any heaven it is only the company of the Saints, which is a source of peace and bliss and a means to achieve God-realization.

One and all say they will go to heaven;
Their heaven's whereabouts, I know not.

They are ignorant
Of the mystery of their own self,
Yet spin endless yarns
To describe their heaven.
So long as a man's mind longs for heaven
He'll not find abode at His lotus feet.

I know not where heaven's fortress stands,
Where its moat, its rampart, its precincts,
Nor do I know where its gateway is.
O Kabir, whom can I tell?
True heaven is only
The company of Saints.
Men say to heaven they'll go;
Where their heaven is, I know not.
