Lord, End This Misery

In strong terms Kabir warns man of the transient nature of the world and the inevitability of death. After every death the soul is given a new birth — a new body — which again has to meet its end in death. Devotion to God is the only way to escape this misery. Kabir prays to the Lord to rid him of this suffering, but at the same time, in a spirit of surrender, says that even if the Lord desires that he be handed over to the lord of death and thus his coming and going be continued, still he will submit to the Lord's will — with only the prayer that he be granted the Lord's darshan before he is handed over to the angels of death.

The mouth that relished
The five delicacies,
Within a moment on that mouth
A flaming torch is placed.
My beloved Lord,
Thou Emperor of all.
Rid me of the affliction
Of burning in the fire
And dwelling in the womb.
The body is subject to waste
In many ways;
Some consign it to flame,
Some to the vigil of earth.

Prays Kabir: Beloved Lord,
Deign to give me at least
One glimpse of thy lotus feet;
After that Thou mayst
Even send Yama to take me,
If such be thy pleasure.
