The Beloved Comes Home

This love song portrays the soul's union with the Lord, through the imagery of a wife's joy at the arrival of her beloved husband after long separation. Her mind is absorbed in singing songs of loving welcome, her heart relishes the nectar of the fulfilment of her love, and the room where she slept in the dark shadows of Ioneliness is flooded with the light of ecstasy at her meeting her husband. The Lord has blessed the devotee with union and the devotee's joy knows no bounds. He did not meet the Lord anywhere outside; he met Him within the temple of his own body. Kabir concludes the song on a note of gratitude, saying that it was not through any of the devotee's efforts that the Lord was realized, but through the Lord's own mercy and grace.

After untold days of separation
I have met my Beloved.
Boundless, indeed, is my good fortune,
For He has himself come to me
Within my own home.

I keep my mind engaged
In blissful songs of welcome,
And I taste within my being
The elixir of his Name.

After endless days of separation
I have met my Beloved
Within my own home.

My temple is flooded with light,
And in bliss I lie with my Beloved
In the deep trance of his loving embrace.

He himself has come to me
Within my own home.

I was in despair, I had lost
All hope of meeting Him;
It is He who has blessed me
With the rare wealth of union.

He himself has come to me
Within my own home.

My efforts were of no avail;
The glory is to you, dear Lord,
That in your grace you came
And met me, within my own home.

Boundless is my joy,
Boundless, indeed, my good fortune.

I did nothing, O Kabir,
To deserve his grace;
The Lord himself, in his mercy,
Blessed me, O friend,
With the bliss of union.

After endless days of separation,
I have met my Beloved today;
He himself has come to me
Within my own home
And boundless is the bliss
Of our union.
