The Lord's Reflection

This poem enumerates some of the qualities of the Satguru or perfect Master. The Master initiates the disciple into the practice of true Name or Shabd, enables him to open his inner eye, go within and come in contact with the divine melody of Shabd and attain the supreme state of fearlessness. He does not advocate observance of rituals and ceremonies or outward forms of worship; his path is that of going within the body. Such a Master has himself gone beyond the regions of mind and maya and become one with the Lord; as Kabir puts it, seeing him is the same as seeing the Lord.

That Master I cherish, O friend,
Who fills the cup of true Name,
Who himself drinks it
And enables me to drink with joy.

That Master is dear to me, O friend,
Who is not fond of pageantry,
Who does not pose as a high priest,
Who performs no external worship,
Who accepts no gifts for himself.

That Master I cherish, O friend,
Who enables me to hear
The unstruck melody,
Who removes the veil from my eyes
And reveals his own form within,
Seeing whom is seeing the Lord.

That Master I cherish, O friend,
Who knows that the pleasures of maya
Are the source of misery and pain;
Who does not involve his disciples
In the chimera of false beliefs;
Who keeps me absorbed day and night
In the bliss of his elevating company;
Who merges my soul in Shabd;
That Master is dear to me, O friend.

Says Kabir: Who knows no fear
And enables me to attain
That divine state of fearlessnes,
He alone is my Master,
Him I love and cherish, O friend.
