The Empty Game

The Muslim divines and the Hindu holy men lay down numerous laws and dogmas to find the Lord, and prescribe various ritualistic practices for seekers. Kabir asks how they can guide others to salvation when they themselves are deluded and bound by the chains of birth and rebirth. The Lord is within the human body and the seeker has to go within to find Him, which is made possible by learning the technique of devotion from a spiritual adept. Kabir points out that the inner sound current or Shabd, being pure, true and everlasting, alone can lead us to the true and everlasting state of bliss.

Seek the Lord within your own body;
O man, boast not about your devotion,
For without learning the technique
Who can become a true devotee?

Some call themselves mulahs, some qazis,
But without realizing the Lord
All their zeal is an empty game.
The pundit and the Brahmin
Talk of scriptures, planets and stars,
But they too have failed to sunder
The dreadful noose of Yama.

Seek the Lord within your body;
O man, without learning the way
Who can become a true devotee?

False and transient is the human body;
Shabd and the Lord's Name alone
Are true and everlasting, O Kabir.
