This Precious Chance

For eons the soul has been taking birth in the world, wearing the different dresses of different bodies by taking birth in various high and low species. Now God has given the rare gift of the human body, a chance to escape from the cycle of births and rebirths. But man wastes this chance toiling to support a family and earning wealth, status and fame. Kabir says that all the hard work a man does to gain worldly objectives is unremunerative labor because it is of no avail on the spiritual path and keeps him bound in the shackles of transmigration. Kabir urges man to understand the importance of the human birth, seek a 'perfect man', the perfect Master, learn from him the way to realize God and thus put an end to his long chain of suffering.

This precious chance
You will not get again:
The chance to seek a perfect man
And through him, meet the Lord.
Many times you have come,
Many times you have departed.
Like a serf you toiled;
You toiled, yet received no wages.
Although one, you donned manifold garbs;
Like a clown you assumed myriad forms.

Now is your chance to find a perfect man
And through him, attain the Lord.
Dear Lord, only one boon I beg of Thee:
Pray end the long trail of Kabir's misery.
