The Rare Wealth

The human body is a rare chance to realize the Lord, a chance that may not be given again and again. Man should utilize his human birth by going to a Saint and following the path of God-realization under his guidance. But, says Kabir, man wastes this opportunity in vain pursuits, and fritters away the precious wealth given to him by the Lord. Instead of seeking the company of Saints, he dissipates his life in the company of worldly people and involves himself in worldly pursuits.

You never kept the company of Saints;
You have frittered away
The wealth of human birth
That was in your hands.

You never sought the company of Saints.

You will not gain this rare chance
Of dwelling in the human body again;
You did not realize the value
Of the company of Saints.

You have frittered away
The fortune that lay in your hands.

Now hell will be your home,
For day and night you relished
The company of the vile and the false.

Seeing everyone rushing to his doom,
Kabir loudly calls: Wake up,
Wake up, O men! In broad daylight
You are being robbed.
