Not the Way

Men adopt various methods to attain salvation: Some chant hymns and sing songs, some jump and dance till they fall into a self-hypnotized trance, some keep standing for years, some hold one arm raised for decades, some contort their bodies with intricate postures and some go about in colourful ritualistic dress; yet others, devoid of devotion themselves, try to impress by initiating devotees. Saints firmly reject all such practices, for they only inflate ego, cause frustration and lead the practitioner away from God. Sometimes the sham devotee feels resentful towards Saints for their forthright repudiation of such deluded practices and candid enunciation of truth. Out of malice and ego, he starts slandering the Saints. Although Saints are unaffected by the slanderer's efforts to malign them, the slanderer is not spared by the law of karma and is sent into lower species to suffer and atone for his deeds.

To jump and jiggle,
To rock and sway
Is not the way of devotion.
Men ape devotees:
They go flaunting about
In ritualistic garbs,
But there is no genuineness
In a loud show of piety.
Such men do not appeal to me,
For to rock and sway
Is not the way of devotion.

They have one thing on their tongue,
The opposite in their heart;
Even in their dreams
They'll not know me,
Nor my path.
In this world, sorrow
Will always be their lot,
For to rock and sway
Is not the way of devotion.

If they wake up,
If they become aware
Of their delusion,
Then there is a chance
Of their salvation.
But to rock and sway
Is not the way of devotion

Those whose heart is averse
To the Master,
Those who speak ill of him
Will be born as swine and dogs.
To rock and sway
Is not the way of devotion.

In the vicious circle of lower species
They'll rotate and rotate, suffering misery;
Only those who realize the Lord
Are dear to my heart, O Kabir.
