Distilling Bliss

In this poem Kabir employs the imagery of a distillery to illustrate the joy of divine bliss. The human body is the vat in which the distilling has to be done and Shabd is the molasses from which the 'wine' is extracted. In other words, one can only taste the wine of divine bliss within the human body and through the practice of Shabd as given by a true Master. Kabir says that if he comes across a Saint, the vintner of divine bliss, he will give up all external forms of worship, religious routines, pilgrimages and austerities, and surrender himself to the Master in order to obtain a drop of that intoxicating drink. He implies that rejection of all external observances and complete surrender to the Master are essential prerequisites for attaining that inner bliss. The cup of the soul is what holds the wine — that is, the elixir can be enjoyed only by the soul, and once it tastes it, all pleasures of the world become insipid.

 

In the vat of my body I'll mix the leaven,
And the Master's Shabd will be the molasses.
I'll mince up craving, lust, anger and jealousy
And add them to spice up the brew.

O Lord, tell me, is there a Saint
Absorbed in the bliss of Sahaj,
To whom I can offer all worship and austerities
As brokerage for a sip of this wine?
I'll surrender my body and mind to the vintner
In exchange for the merest drop of this liquor.

I have made the fourteen worlds the furnace,
I have lit it with the flame
Of divine knowledge within.
With the melody of Sahaj
I have sealed the pot,
And in the Sukhman
Tve put the cooling pad.

Pilgrimage, fasting and religious routines,
Ablutions and austerities
And the practice of breath control —
I will pawn them all
For that intoxicating drink!
I will fill the cup of my soul
With the ambrosial wine
And joyfully drink
This juice of eternal bliss.

From the still drips ceaselessly
The immaculate nectar;
Tasting it, my mind is in ecstasy.
Says Kabir: All other wines
Are bitter and false,
This elixir alone
Is sweet and true.
