Master Shows the Way

A seeker's delusions only end when he comes in contact with a perfect Master and learns from him the way of spiritual practice. Then he realizes that God cannot be met through fasts, pilgrimages, chanting, asceticism, austerities and other external observances. With the grace of the Master he gives up all the rites, rituals and forms of worship to which he was deeply attached; he inculcates noble qualities, overcomes his pride and receives the blessing of Naam.

When I was deluded, O brother,
My perfect Master showed me the way.

I gave up all acts of piety,
All rituals and ceremonies,
And I gave up baths in holy waters.
The world is indeed wise and sane,
It is only I who am mad.

When I was going astray, O brother,
My perfect Master showed me the way.

Now I don't care for the complex ways
Of serving and worshipping gods;
I do not ring the temple bells,
I do not install idols on thrones,
Nor offer flowers in obeisance.

I was going astray, O brother,
But my perfect Master showed me the way.

The Lord is not pleased
With chanting and austerities,
Nor with self-mortification.
The Lord is not pleased
With discarding clothes,
Nor with suppressing the senses.

I was going astray, O brother,
But my Master showed me the way.

He who is kind and loving,
Truthful and righteous;
Who lives in the world
But lives unconcerned;
Who looks upon all creatures
As he looks on himself;
He meets the Everlasting One, my friend.

When I was deluded, O brother,
My perfect Master showed me the way.

He who bears slander and harsh words
With grace and patience;
Who discards disputes and arguments
And gives up ego and pride;
Such a one, O Kabir,
Obtains the blessing
Of the Lord's true Name.
