Behind the Mole

Men who are spiritually ignorant, who have no direct knowledge of the spiritual wealth that lies within their own body, usually talk about the inner worlds and try to prove themselves on the scale of others' judgment. But the devotee, who goes within and enjoys spiritual bliss, has little inclination to speak about his experiences. Kabir enjoins upon such a devotee to treasure his wealth of realization, keep it securely deposited in the vaults of his heart and make no attempt to impress others or to gain their esteem.

One who has tasted the ambrosia of inner bliss, who is intoxicated with the wine of divine love, does not go after the insipid taste of worldly pleasures and possessions, any more than a swan, or soul who has reached the divine region of Mansarovar, would be pulled down by worldly attachments. Concluding the poem, Kabir says that the Lord resides within the human body, but one cannot see Him with the physical eyes. He is hidden behind the third eye, called by Saints 'the mole'. The seeker has to withdraw his consciousness to this point and open his inner eye in order to see Him.

When the mind is filled with ecstasy
It has no inclination to speak.

When you have obtained
The rare diamond,
When you have embedded it
In your heart,
Why display it
Again and again?
When you were light and empty
The scale of adulation
Raised you high;
Now that you are whole and filled,
Why mount the balance?

The soul has become intoxicated,
It has drunk the wine of divine love
Beyond limit, beyond measure.
When the swan has regained
The crystal shores of Mansarovar,
Why would it go to ponds and pools?

Within your own body
Resides your Lord,
Why open the outer eyes
To look for Him?
Says Kabir: Listen, O friends,
I found the Lord
Behind the mole.
