The True Benefactor

Kabir calls the Master a benefactor because he brings the seeker, deluded by unfruitful outward practices, to the path of inner spiritual practice. Kabir also praises the disciple who, once put on the path, continues his spiritual practice with determination and patience. Calling the Master a son of God, he says that the way to worship the Lord is through the Master, for a perfect Master is the devotee's only savior in this world of misery and pain.

Only that benefactor
Is dear to me, O friend,
Who brings to the right path
Those who have gone astray.

He is the man of wisdom
Who stays firmly on the path,
Who is never weary
In his search for the Lord.

He is false
Who renounces the Son;
He is true
Who worships the Lord
Through the Master's grace.

But men are dazzled
By the world's glitter;
Seeing their riches and sons,
They are puffed with pride.

Who goes within his own body
And lights the lamp within,
His temple is flooded with light;
All die and remain dead,
Only they are saved
Who the savior's shelter take.
