The One in the Many

The Lord, described by scriptures and holy books as invisible and inaccessible, becomes manifest to the disciple through his meditation, when done according to the instructions of a perfect Master. The gateway to the Lord's mansion is the eye center, for at this point the disciple's soul enters the inner spiritual regions and, after crossing the different stages, arrives at the Lord's abode.

It is commonly said that the Lord exists in each and every particle of his creation. But Kabir says that when a disciple attains access to the highest spiritual realm and sees the Lord within, only then does he perceive Him everywhere in the outer world as well. Such a disciple can vouch from his own experience that the Formless One is present within every form; others only repeat it on the basis of the hearsay evidence of books and scriptures.

The second of these two poems illustrates that once the Lord is realized, the mind, which is an obstacle on the path because of its cravings and outward tendencies, becomes a friend. The realized devotee does not feel the necessity of curbing his mind, for wherever it goes, it sees only God. When duality is destroyed, none else exists except the Lord.

 

Almighty Lord!
Thou art eternal and peerless;
Who realizes Thee is liberated.
O Thou life and essence of all,
If Thou be merciful to me,
No more will I dwell in delusion.

The Lord was unattainable,
Impervious and imperceptible;
Through his own knowledge
My Master revealed Him to me.
The One in whose quest
I kept wandering in all directions,
Him I see, through my Master's grace,
Present all over the world.

My Master opened the stubborn door within;
The eternal flame became visible
And the yawning gates
Of misery and death were sealed.
The Supreme One revealed himself;
I found Him through my meditation —
The same Lord I once looked for
In temples, trees and worship.
Now the One assumes manifold shapes,
I see the Formless in many a form.

Says Kabir: O merciful Lord,
Varied paths I followed in quest of Thee;
Now through Thy Name all my obstacles,
All my blemishes have dissolved,
And I've attained the state of supreme bliss.

Rāmrāi tu aisā anbhoot anupam

 

O mind, I give you freedom to roam
Wherever you feel inclined to go.
To curb your movements now
I'll not put a goad on your head,
For wheresoever I cast my eyes
There I see none else but the Lord.
Having recognized the Lord within,
My thoughts rest only in Him.

As long as I was tied to the body,
Duality existed for me;
Since Realization came,
Here, there, everywhere,
The One alone do I see.
I am merged in Him,
My 'I' exists no more.
Says Kabir: I am completely absorbed
In the Ocean of bliss.
