Simran

This poem from the Adi Granth extols the virtues of simran, or repetition of the Lord's Name, and urges the seeker to do it at all times without even a moment's break. The simran of the Saints is not an oral repetition of certain names or mantras; it is a process to be performed by the mind, and its technique can only be obtained from a spiritual adept or perfect Master.

Kabir says that this simran opens the disciple's inner eye or the 'gateway' to the inner spiritual worlds, enables him to come into contact with the divine melody or Shabd and leads him to self-realization and realization of the Lord. Kabir emphasizes that on the soul's inner journey, simran wards off whatever obstacles the negative power may put in the way, for no magic, charms, incantations or negative forces can prevail over the power of simran.

The simran that unfolds
The gateway of liberation;
That carries you
Not to this world of turbulence
But to the divine realms within;
That enables you to play
The music of drum
In the home of the Fearless One;
That takes you to the region
Where rings the unstruck melody
In its all-pervading glory —
Do that simran within your mind,
For without such simran
You'll not find true freedom.

The simran before which
The negative forces
Cannot put obstacles in your path;
That will give you salvation
And rid you of your heavy load —
Cherish that simran in your heart
So you do not come again
To this world of pain.
Do that simran within your mind;
Without it you'll not find freedom.

The simran that enables you
To revel in bliss;
That kindles within you
A lamp without oil,
A lamp with an immortal flame
Whose light dispels the poisonous gloom
Of lust and anger from within you —
Do that simran within your mind,
Without it you'll not find freedom.

The simran that emancipates you,
Keep that simran wreathed in your heart,
Wear that simran like a precious necklace:
Never, never take it off;
Then will you earn the Master's grace
And you will be ferried across —
Do that simran within your mind,
Without it you'll not find freedom.

The simran that puts an end
To your indigence;
That enables you to sleep
Within your temple
In undisturbed calm;
That helps your soul to bloom
On the couch of bliss —
Drink, day after day,
The nectar of that simran;
Do that simran within your mind,
Without it you'll not find freedom.

The simran that dissolves
All calamities;
The simran that allows not
The snares of maya to entrap you —
Do that simran:
Repeat, repeat the Lord's Name,
Sing his Name within your heart.
The method of this simran
Only from the Master will you obtain —
Do that simran within your mind,
Without it you'll not find freedom.

Day and night, over and again,
Repeat, repeat his Name.
Repeat while you walk or sit,
Repeat with each morsel you eat,
Repeat with each breath you take,
While sleeping or awake, relish,
Relish the ambrosia of simran.
Only through good fortune will you gain
The simran of the Lord's Name;
Do that simran within your mind,
Without it you'll not find freedom.

The simran that puts no load upon you,
Let that simran of God's Name
Be your succor and support.
Says Kabir: Boundless indeed
Is the power of simran,
Before which neither sorcery
Nor incantations can stand.
Do that simran within your mind;
Without it you'll not find freedom.
