The Find

Saints describe Shabd or Naam as vastu, a very rare 'thing'. Kabir says that he has found it, and it is priceless, indivisible and indestructible. Shabd — variously called the Word, the Name of God, Naam, the sound current, the divine melody or nectar — pervades the entire creation. It is beyond the reach of scholarship and intellect, yet dwells within every human being. Kabir says that those who know Shabd, those who go within and realize it, become free from the chain of birth and death. The Saints come from Shabd, they remain merged in Shabd, they are Shabd. They attain true love for the Lord and themselves become an ocean of supreme love.

I have found something,
Something rare have I found;
Its value none can assess.

It has no colour, it is one,
Indivisible and everlasting —
Untouched by the waves of change,
It fills each and every vessel.

It has no weight, it has no price;
Beyond the bounds of measurement,
It cannot be counted,
And through erudition
It cannot be known.
It is neither heavy nor light,
No touchstone can assay its worth.

I dwell in it, it dwells in me,
We are one, like water
Mixed with water.
He who knows it,
Will never die;
He who knows it not,
Dies again and again.

Kabir the Lord's slave, has discovered
An ocean filled with the nectar of love;
But I find no one disposed to taste it.
When men do not believe my words,
Words from my own experience,
What else can I say to convince them?
