Who Dwell in Naam

Kabir urges the seeker to undertake the practice of Naam and remain absorbed in it day and night. Those who have attained success in their quest for God have done so through their absorption in Naam. Sages, hermits and other holy men who took to practices other than that of Naam failed to gain their objective of God-realization in spite of all their hard labor. Kabir calls Naam the kalpataru, the mythological tree which fulfils the wishes made before it, because Naam grants the highest wish of a true seeker — union with the Lord.

They who day and night are awake
Only to the Name of God
Attain fulfilment
Through their absorption in the Name.

Seekers, seers and hermits,
All toil to win Him, but fail;
For it is only the Name
That, like a wish-fulfiling tree,
Grants the boon — liberation.

Those who dwell on the Lord
Do not from Him remain apart,
For they have realized, O Kabir,
The Lord's Name.
