Name or Word is the means by which one can escape from this region of mind and maya, of birth and death. Kabir calls it a strong ship in which one can cross the turbulent ocean of phenomena and reach the haven of everlasting bliss. The ship of Naam has been made by the Lord himself and after creating it, He has handed over its captaincy to the Master, who alone can guide the ship across. In other words, God has designed the path of Naam and has handed over its secret to the perfect Master. Those who recognize the Master can board the ship and reach the Lord. Those who fail to recognize him, or who continue to have doubts about him, do not obtain the boon of Naam and keep drifting in the ocean of misery and sorrow.

Lord, Thou Master of all creation,
Thy Name is the sturdy ship
To cross the dreadful ocean of existence.

Had the Lord not designed this ship,
The entire world would have been consumed
By the raging flames of passion.
My gracious Lord in his mercy
Raised the ship of Naam,
And its command He entrusted
To the Saints.

Naam is the destroyer of all pain,
The adornment of the entire creation;
The source of all love and devotion.
It is the haven of peace and bliss.
The Lord himself has made this ship,
And it is called the Lord's Name.

Those who hold onto the ship firmly,
Cross over to the shore of bliss;
Those who keep wavering in two minds
Lose their footing, and no one knows
Their whereabouts in the stormy sea.
Such people drown or stay moored
To this shore of misery and pain —
They keep burning in the world's deadly fires,
No one comes to their rescue.
They do nothing to save themselves;
They do not recognize Him
Who has come to rescue them.
Those who discover the savior
Become pure and whole;
Those who fail to recognize him
Burn in their own blazing passions,
Like moths in the flame.

O man, attach yourself to the Lord's Name;
Wake up, be aware of your true self.
Says Kabir: Only they gain liberation
Who remain absorbed in the Lord's love.
