Tethered to Prejudice

Men try to realize God but their efforts are circumscribed by their own preconceived notions, their deeply ingrained prejudices and fanatical belief in formal practices. Kabir says that just as farmers tie two donkeys together to hinder their movement, men tie themselves to their religious prejudices and fail to follow the true path of God-realization. Giving hints of this path, he says that the seeker should develop love and devotion, realize the One Lord and see Him with his inner eye — his soul's eye. Such a seeker, while living in this imperfect world, will become perfect; in other words, he will be free from his prejudices, free from the bonds of mind and maya and the shackles of karma. Having thus become pure, he will merge in the Pure One.

Biased with one view or another,
The entire world dwells in delusion.
He who adores the Lord,
Without bigotry or bias,
Is the Saint, the enlightened one;
Biased with one view or another,
All the rest dwell in delusion.

As a donkey is tied
To another donkey,
So are men tethered
To their own predilections.
He who sees with his soul's eye
Is the truly realized one.
Biased with one view or another,
All the rest dwell in delusion.

They who realize the One,
Realize the Truth.
They are always engrossed
In their love for the Lord,
Never again will they come
To this valley of pain;
They become perfect,
Perfect becomes their vision,
And they see the Perfect One.
Biased with one view or another,
All the rest dwell in delusion.

Unique is the bliss of Realization,
It is inconceivable,
It is beyond words, O Kabir.
But biased with one view or another
The entire world dwells in delusion.
