Light the Lamp

Saints describe the world as a dark well, an abyss of sorrow where it is impossible to see things in their true perspective and realize the Lord. Kabir says that if man will light the lamp of his heart with the spark of the Master's Word, he will be able to see his way out of this blind well. The Lord is within the body, but He is hidden by the veil of ego. God, the mighty mountain, is obscured by a blade of grass — man's ego and selfish motives. Yet man's delusion is so formidable and the veil of ego so strong that he is unable to pierce them and see the Truth. Kabir says that only by taking the shelter of a Master and getting the spark of divine knowledge from him will a seeker be able to attain God-realization.

O friend, light your lamp
With the Master's spark;
The world is a blind well,
Dismal and dark.

Maya's tinsel glitter blinds one and all;
They fail to see the Lord.
Light your lamp with the Master's spark.

The Primal One lives in your body,
A mountain behind a blade of grass.
The scent is within its navel,
Yet the musk deer wanders around
Sniffing jungle trees and bark.
Light your lamp with the Master's spark.

If you listen to Kabir's words,
My friend, the bars of delusion
Will fall apart.

O friend, light your lamp
With the Master's spark;
The world is a blind well.
Dismal and dark.
