Warm regards from Jaimal Singh to my obedient son, Babu Sawan Singh.

The compassionate Hazur is a wondrous Lord. Fathomless, nameless, and formless is he. The stream of Divine Knowledge is flowing; so the current of Mercy is about to come, and is already coming, but a single veil still remains. Surrender your self, my son. All that exists – the Inner Faculties of surat and nirat, the gross mind, the higher mind, the vital energy, the physical body, the three bodies (gross, astral, causal), etc., that is to say, the states that manifest themselves in the cycle of twenty-four hours, the attributes of the three bodies, the worldly possessions of the physical body – do not let your mind desire any of these.

Nor should you concern yourself with what will happen next, or how you will do it. Put aside all such anxieties. All your possessions were given to you in the beginning by the Satguru, so they should have been held in trust. They were never to be regarded as your own. Now the Satguru’s will has to be engraved in your mind.

Understand that

I am nothing. All is the Satguru’s; I do not exist.

Everything that exists, the soul, intellect, mind, and all the means for performing worldly activities, none of these belongs to you – they all belong to the Satguru. They should be completely removed from your mind.

The reality of life is the soul, my son. The mind and soul received every provision from Sach Khand to go about their duty in the land of Kal after receiving the Shabd from the Satguru. They were to merge into the current of the Shabd to enable the soul to return to Sach Khand. The soul and mind, however, have completely forgotten this command, and by intermingling with maya have fallen under its control and now consider everything to be their own. The soul and mind have both been imprisoned by maya, and Kal has pressed them down with the weight of karmas.

So long as the disciple does not take out the self by surrendering his all to the Satguru and removing himself from everything, he will not be liberated. So surrender your self and step aside, my son. Consider that each and every thing in the world – body, mind, and wealth – belongs to the Satguru, that you are nothing. Do all your work knowing it to be thus, and stay within the Satguru’s instructions. He will then take you with Him when He considers you fit. Engrave within your mind a deep Love and devotion for His Lotus Feet and keep lying in their refuge. The Shabd Dhun is a blessing from the Satguru, my son, it is a gift that will never disappear. One day the Dhun will take you to Sach Khand. Love the Shabd Dhun with devotion every day, and keep alive the Inner Longing for It.

The rest of the news is that I received your letter and was happy to read it. A letter from Bachint Singh also came, saying that your Baba Ji had been ill but was better now. At the Dera, a bhandara was held on the full-moon day, the 18th of Asarh1, Monday, 1 July. Please write and let me know if my visit to your place is for darshan or to initiate some people there. Write how many seekers are there, and I will then let you know, but please reply promptly. It would be good if you could get leave to go home to visit Ma Ji and your Baba Ji. For the rest, we are to remain happy in the will of the compassionate Hazur.

Convey my greetings to Basant Singh, Chanan Singh, Narain Singh, Babu Gajja Singh Ji, Diwan Singh, and Babu Gulab Singh. All of them are urged to do their Bhajan and Simran every day. You never write about Basant Singh’s studies: how is he doing in school? We still have a month to send money to Agra. We will see to it later on; it has not yet been fully decided. A canister of fresh ghee has been packed and sent to you, addressed to the railway office at Murree Hills. It has not been weighed; you may weigh it, although there is no particular need: a full canister of ghee weighs around nineteen kilograms. Let me know when you receive it.

So, you have received less work this year.

Stay pleased with that, my son, and do your Bhajan. The only thing that is ours is Naam, the Shabd Dhun. With Love and devotion, keep the Inner Faculties of the soul, surat and nirat, fixed in that alone. With your hands and feet and the help of the mind attend to your worldly work, and keep the Love and faith of the higher mind at the Satguru’s Holy Feet.

Best wishes from Bibi to you, her dear brother. Best regards from Bibi and all the people at the Dera to all of you. Your 10 rupees arrived here by money order and have been credited to the expense of the bhandara. May Grace and Mercy be upon everyone.

Sher Singh of the army battery wrote to ask for both of Hazur Swami Ji’s books. They are with me. From Agra, I brought two copies of Hazur’s Sar Bachan in verse, two copies of the prose version, and two volumes of Sant Sangreh, Part I and Part II. I will send them as soon as you write, or you can take them with you when you come on leave.

All of you are asking me to come. The fare costs 50 rupees, which would be a sheer waste; and the discomfort of the journey that I would have to go through – well, who cares about that! But the expenditure of 50 rupees would not serve any meaningful purpose. For the rest, my son, I welcome whatever is the will of Hazur Swami Ji.

The parcel was booked from Beas railway station to Murree railway office. The invoice will indicate whether or not the freight has been paid. It was sent on 4 July 1901.
