Why do we not hear the Melody of Naam?
The mind is for ever floating on the crest of its waves. It is full of the filth of sense pleasures with the result that our attention has scattered into the world. It cannot, therefore, capture the melody of the Sound.
The impure minds do not devote themselves to the Word, and receive not the Name. Impure they live, impure they die and lose honour as they depart.
With a polluted mind, devotional service cannot be performed, and the Naam, the Name of the Lord, cannot be obtained. The filthy, self-willed Manmukhs die in filth, and they depart in disgrace.

Adi Granth, Sri Raag M3, p. 39
So long as the mind is trapped in the whirlpool of desires one is puffed up by ego. Such a one is neither attuned to the Word, nor does he love the Naam.
As long as his mind is disturbed by waves, he is caught in ego and egotistical pride. He does not find the taste of the Shabd, and he does not embrace love for the Name. (Guru Amar Das)
