The Sound is independent of the ten Vital Forces (Pranas)
The Sidhas, Yogis, asked Guru Nanak:
Where is the home of the Shabd, through which is one ferried across the sea of existence? The air is said to be of ten kinds which one of these sustains it?
Where is the Shabd said to dwell? What will carry us across the terrifying world-ocean? The breath, when exhaled, extends out ten finger lengths; what is the support of the breath?
Guru Nanak Dev –

Guru Nanak replied:
The Shabd is inside us. It is invisible; wherever I look, I find It. The air issues from the void. The Shabd is not sustained by anything.
That Shabd dwells deep within the nucleus of all beings. God is invisible; wherever I look, there I see Him. The air is the dwelling place of the Absolute Lord. He has no qualities; He has all qualities.

The Shabd is within us. It is invisible. Wherever I look, I see It. The air comes from the void, but the Shabd is not sustained by anything.
Unless we turn inwards and rise beyond Sushmana1, the Royal Vein, we cannot hear It. We can contact the Shabd only in the human body.
By purifying the mind one crosses this world. This is done by reflecting on the quintessence of the self. They who serve the Master enjoy peace, and Shabd pervades their inner being.
One who purifies his body, crosses over the terrifying world-ocean; he contemplates the essence of his own soul. Serving the Guru, he finds everlasting peace; deep within, the Shabd permeates him, coloring him with virtue.

If one searches the township of the body2 through the Shabd, one gains the nine treasures of Naam3.
One who searches the village of the body, through the Shabd, obtains the nine treasures of the Naam.
Guru Amar Das –

The human body is like a radio receiving-set for listening to the Shabd. When we tune in a radio set, we begin to hear a sound.
Similarly, when the Master, Satguru tunes us inside, we become fit to hear the Divine Music. Then, by regulating this set, we hear various kinds of sound.

2) Township of the body: As long as physical life lasts, the body is the dwelling for the soul.
3) The nine Spiritual Treasures are:
1. Bharosa – Faith. A deep faith in the Lord and dependence of the Lord. The firm faith in Waheguru is the first and foremost experience of a practitioner of Naam.
2. Leenta – An absolute attachment to the Lord.
3. Santokh – Contentment.
4. Bairaag – Detachment – from worldly possessions.
5. Hukam – Acceptance of and total surrender to the will of the Almighty.
6. Sahaj – Equilibrium and Equipoise of the mind.
7. Anand – Perpetual delight and permanant joy.
8. Vismaad – Ecstasy. Joy and wonderment.
9. Nadar – An awakened soul considers the Almighty as the prime reason of his attainments and that his own efforts means nothing. This attitude keeps ego far away from the person.
